ONLY ONE CRUISER
THIS YEAR’S PROGRAMME ADMIRALTY DECISION By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Wednesday. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. W. C. Bridgeman, announced that only one cruiser would be laid down in the present financial year. In view of the situation disclosed at the Geneva Naval Arms Limitation Conference the Admiralty had decided that it would be unnecessary and undesirable to lay down the other two cruisers on the programme this year. Mr. Bridgeman’s announcement means the saving of an A class cruiser (£1,975,000) and a B class cruiser (£1,580,000). The life of a cruiser theoretically Is 15 years and the upkeep costs about £250,000 a year. The decision of the Admiralty, therefore, means a saving to the taxpayers of more than £11,000,000 in the coming year, apart from repairs.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. ____________
