Grand Opening of Yachting Season

SATURDAY’S ARRANGEMENTS COURSES AND HANDICAPS The 1927-28 yachting season on the Waitemata will open officially next Saturday afternoon when the larger yachts and launches will contest cruising races to Islington Bay and the smaller craft will race in the harbour. All races are under the control of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association and all its affiliated clubs will take part. In the cruising races the fleet has been divided into six classes, the boats of each chub to race together in their respective classes.

All events will be started from the tower at King’s Wharf and a buoy will be used as the outer starting-mark, instead of a launch. Five kerosene tins will be used for starting in place of flags.

The course for A and B classes is from starting-line off King’s Wharf, thence round Rangitoto and Motutapu, finishing at Islington Bay between launch Linda and markboat. The sandspit beacon, Beam Rock lighthouse, and the red buoy off Narrow Neck must be observed as fairway marks, but other fairway marks are to be disregarded.

The course for C and E. classes and all mullet boats is from starting-line off King’s Wharf, thence round Duder’s spit buoy in Rangitoto Channel, on. starboard keeping channel side of the sandspit beacon and the luminous buoys, going out and returning, and the red beacon off Rangitoto, near Islington Bay, and finishing between the launch Linda and markboat.

For the Star, M, V. S, and all 14ft classes, the course is from startingline, thence round sandspit beacon, thence round Resolution Buoy, back round outer mark on starting line, twice round, keeping all marks on starboard. The course may be reversed, in which case marks will be kept on port hand. A white flag will indicate first to sandspit beacon and a black flag Resolution buoy.

The course for class Z is the same as the above classes, except that they proceed once-round only.

The course for launches is from starting-line, direct to Islington Bay, observing Sandspit beacon, Bean Rock Lighthoue, and the red beacon off Rangitoto.
