Manawatu Horses Prepare for Levin

NOTES FROM AWAPUNI CROWN AREA’S MISHAP . (Special to THE SUN.) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Training operations at Awapuni on Tuesday morning were carried out under winter rather than spring-like conditions. Indeed, following upon a steady downpour since Sunday night, the tracks were almost as heavy as they had been at the height of the winter.

Shining Star and Broad Acre who claim engagements at Levin, were the first to work the pair being sent over five furlongs on the grass proper, the trestles being well out from the rails. Shining Star had an advantage in the weights and led his companion home in 1.11, despite the fact that his rider was well up on his neck through his saddle slipping forward. Broad Acre is of a solid type and is at present carrying plenty of condition. Maidos, who is in at the minimum in the Hurdles at Levin, was given a strong round on the grass, but he did not appear to be going well. In any case he prefers the bigger obstacles . Le Champ, Lin Arlington and Royal Land were associated in a flutter over five furlongs, which were left behind, in the good time of 1.8 2-5. Le Champ had two length’s break at the jump out. with the other pair on terms, and they raced in that order to the straight, where Lin Arlington ran up to the leader to beat him home, Royal Land being well back. Lin Arlington carried a light-weight and found the going more to his liking than did Royal Land. Le Champ appeared to be stopping badly at the finish. Hodren who has built up considerably during the off season, left half a mile behind in 52, the Rangitero gelding moving quite attractively. ENJOYING A SPELL Crown Area and Fee Simple, the two members of G. New’s team who went amiss at Riccarton, have been accorded a let up. The eldfer Acre representative was in a bad way for a period, and it will probably be some little time before he is himself again. The mishap occurred at a most unfortunate time, for a big race should have been within his powers during the course of the, Christmas season. Fee Simple’s ailment is a joint, but it is hoped that it will respond readily to treatment. Following breakfast Sir Fanciful, Redbank and Gunpowder, the last> named., being a- four-year-old "Warplane representative, all of whom are members of L. Knapp’s string, were associated in a strong working gallop over a round on the grass, finishing on terms. Mireusonta ran four furlongs alone in 55 4-5 on the grass proper. The Absurd gelding struck out freely enough, but was blowing very hard at the conclusion. He nevertheless looks tq be in good trim, although he is far from being the Mireusonta of old. Phantasy,, Powhiri and Lady Faye were sent over six furlongs, last five taking 1.12. Phantasy and Powhiri raced on terms, with Lady Faye about two lengths back to the straight entrance, where the last named made a forward move and the trio were .on terms at the finishing post. Some Lad and Mister Gamp hopped off from the six furlong post, the Some Boy gelding immediately opening up a three to four length break, and was still holding it as they turned for home. The Bronzetti gelding commenced to close up the gap. but his companion hung on better than usual and was still clear at the finishing point, the distance being accomplished in 1.24 3-5. - ‘ _ Desert Lad had the services of T. Green in a scamper over five furlongs, which were left behind in 1.10. The Acre gelding is a pormising sort, but is still on the green side. He will be given his first outing with the colours up at Levin, where he is a candidate in the Maiden. LIKES IT HARD Novar, who does not appreciate heavy going, was sent over six furlongs on the grass, the last five taking 1.13. The prospect of similar track conditions at Levin will discount the Sarto gelding’s prospects in the Levin Cup considerably. Kilmiss, who has now emerged into open company, will figure in the Cup at Levin, in which she is in at tlxe .minimum. The Kilboy mare has run some good races in the mud, but the class she will be called upon to meet promises to be a little too rich, and probably Paitonu and Euphonium will be the public’s elect on the day, though Waicullus and Beaumont handle heavy going well. The Catmint-Nordica three-year-old Bizet, who was formerly known as Hannibal, was given a light task on the inner grass. He is not being asked to race at Levin. Chrissarto, who claims an engagement at Levin over the sticks, was sent a round on the grass at a good pace by C. Robinson, who piloted the Sarto-Miss Sation gelding when he brought off the surprise win at the Manawatu Hunt fixture.

Merry Dampn, who has had a most strenuous caireer since he first ap-

peared in public as a two-year-old, has been sent home to his owner fov a well-deserved spell. R. E. Hatch has Del Sarto back in work and this member of his string promises to make good as a jumper for he has jumping ability as well as a fair amount of pace. The Warplane representative, Plane, was given a light task on the grass. The gelding, who figures in the Maiden at Levin, has built up considerably and appears to have grown slightly of late. T. Lloyd halted at Palmerston North on his return from Riccarton and will train at A-wapufii for the next three months at least. There is a possibility that the Woodville trainer will become domiciled at this centre. Piuthair was a visitor to the track on Tuesday morning, being worked on the sand by T. Green, but Clarinda was not an active worker.
