THIEVES ATTEMPT TO BLOW OPEN SAFE
CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARIES (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. An attempt to blow open the safe in the office of H. J. Otley and Co., timber merchants, Tuam Street, was made last The thieves forced an entrance by a back window. A watchman later discovered that an explosive had been set to blow the safe open, but the fuse had burned out without reaching: the detonator. A thief who specialises in boring out the panels of shop doors has been operating in the St. Albans district for some time past. Last evening he applied his methods to. the grocery shop of X). Herriott and Sons. A quantity of goods was stolen.
