SAILORS’ HOME
APPEAL FOR FUNDS URGENT REPAIR WORK At considerable cost the strengthening of the foundations of the Auckland Sailors’ Home has recently been completed. When investigations were made some time ago a critical state of affairs was revealed, and it was found necessary to carry out this work. Renovations and structural alterations are now under consideration by the council, which has the benefit of the advice of an architect, Mr. D. B. Patterson. A fund has been opened to enable the public to subscribe to this work, andfthe council urgently solicits financial assistance to enable it to carry out the repairs and alterations. The council aims at obtaining £IO,OOO and as just over £3,000 has been contributed the sum necessary is about £7,000. Appeals for the relief of unemployment have militated against a response such as might have been expected, and only the urgency of the position merits an appeal at the present time. The council is very grateful to those who have already contributed, and is confident that when the need of the institution is made known to a wider public the necessary funds will receive generous support. The Sailors’ Home has been in existence for over 40 years for the accommodation of visiting seamen, for the relief of sick and destitute seamen, and for the helping of shipwrecked crews. A real home away from home is provided for the seamen. Contributions should be forwarded to the secretary, P.O. Box 386, Auckland.
