SAVE THE BEACH
DEVONPORT PROTEST The residents of the big block of Devonport fronting King Edward Barade are suspicious that certain waterfront improvements contemplated by the Devonport Council will destroy a very popular beach about the head of Duder’s wharf. The council has proposed to build a stone wall with money from the Watson bequest, but at last evening’s meeting, Mr. W. D. Meiklejohn and 108 other residents presented a petition asking that the beach be not damaged. It had always, been much frequented by children; it could be used at all states of the tide; no fatality had ever occurred there, and the boatmen whose boats were moored out from the beach required it, as it was the only safe place from which to launch a dinghy .in easterly weather. The Mayor: We want to have the co-operation of the residents; probably they do not know what the council proposes. A nice stone wall and a flight of steps would be great improvements. The wall will not go outside the line of the abutment of the wharf. Mr. Massey: “We want to save all the beaches along there; they will be the only ones left.” It was decided that the council meet the petitioners at the beach and endeavour to secure agreement on a line of action.
