The annual report on mental hospitals shows that they contain 8,610 patients, aft increase of 174 for the year, and a proportion of one in 275 of the general population. During the year 105 patients escaped. All were recaptured, excepting 21, and none of these are of the dangerous class. The report strongly urges an amendment of the Lunacy Act to provide legislation for mental defectives.—A. and N.Z.
