RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“A HERO OF THE BIG SNOWS” Better, if such Js possible, than the exciting fight in f 'Below the Line,” is that struggle between Rin-Tin-Tin and a hunger-mad wolf pack in the canine star’s latest Warner production, released by Master Pictures, “A Hero of the Big Snows,” which is being shown at the Rialto and Regent Theatres. The ferocity and blood-curdling action that is flashed on the screen leaves no doubt in the minds of the audience as to the safety of any of the animal actors in the story. But so cleverly acted and directed was this picture, that although no harm was done to any of the animals, a fight thrill that is all thrills has been preserved forever in film. Not only the fight scenes of the dog, but those of the girl, Alice Calhoun, against the same pack with an empty gun, are breath-takingly effective. Miss Calhoun makes a very pretty and plucky heroine, in this story of the Canadian wilds, written by Ewart Adamson. Don Alvarado is excellent in the role of Ed Nolan, wastrel and sluggard, until the girl and the dog come into his life and metamorphose him completely. Leo Willis is a cruel and treacherous trapper, a truly villainous characterisation, and little Mary Jane Milliken is delightful as the baby sister of Miss Calhoun.
Herman Ray maker has directed this production so expertly that the result is a marvellous and thrilling photoplay with some remarkable snow scenes and exciting action. Nanette, Rinty’s mate, shares screen honours with the famous canine star.
“A Hero of the Big Snows” will be a revelation to the most thrill-hard-ened picturegoer.
