“FAUST”

COMING TO NEW REGENT Direct from its phenomenal success at the Royal Albert Hall, London, “Faust,” the U.F.A. masterpiece, will have its New Zealand premiere at the Regent Theatre on Friday. The gala opening performance was attended by the most cosmopolitan and remarkable array of noted personalities including members of the Royal household, the Cabinet, and every wellknown patron and critic of art, music and drama. Never before has the British Press as a whole given a unanimous opinion on the merits of a play as in the case of the picturised version of Goethe’s famous and immortal drama. F. "W. Marnau, the celebrated European producer, has been responsible for the entire production, and his casting of the various important parts has been masterly. Emil Jannings, recognised to-day as the world’s leading screen characterplayer, plays the part of Mephisto, who makes the evil one a being almost human in his every move, yet with a swiftness, a sleekness, a devilishness that is not in any creature of this earth. Marguerite is in the capable hands of Miss Camilla Horne, a beautiful newcomer to the screen, and Gosta Ekman, Sweden’s greatest actor, plays the title role of “Faust.” That incomparable artiste, Yvonne Guilbert. the famous French chanteuse, appears as Aunt Martha. Maurice Guttridge, the musical director of the Regent, who has be m working on the special musical score for the past four weeks, advises that every member of his famous orchestra feels that both picture and music will share equal honours by everyone who sees the picture and hears the remarkable musical accompaniment. John Barrymore has announced that he has already selected a leading lady for his United Artists production to follow “Tempest.” She is Camilla Horn, a beautiful European blonde, who has been appearing in Continental cabarets.
