SHOULD THEY PLAY? PROS. SAY “NO.” WELLINGTON, Monday. As the question of professionals playing in Shield matches will be discussed at the Christchurch conference this week, they were interviewed here on the subject, and expressed the belief that the interests of cricket would be better served if they did not, but acted as umpires, with the right to give advice to players during the progress of the game. Something of this sort is apparently done in England. In their opinion the players would probably do better if they knew they were being watched by experts.
