Leading Trainer Is At Awapuni
RUN OF SUCCESSES USEFUL TEAM OF HACKS To Awapuni is credited the honour of furnishing the leading trainer to date for the present season, George New being the mentor referred to. Although he had built up his team considerably prior to the close of last season, it was not till activities for the new period had been entered upon that New burst into the limelight with ’a select little band, all save one being still in the hack class. With a view to the future he took two or three horses through to the New Plymouth hunt meeting, and there scored two modest successes with his newly-acquired jumper Maidos, and the Rangitiro gelding Wanderlust, the latter having been an absentee from the active ranks practically since he had opened his maiden account at Woodville two seasons earlier. Halting at Marton on the return journey, he took the honours in the Malden the first day with the Gasbag gelding Glimp, thus attaining the honour of leading in the winner .of the first race on the new course. On the second day he just failed to account.for the maiden event with the Acre representative, Fee Simple. Better fortune was to follow at the Wanganui fixture, for Royal Land brought off a surprise victory in the open seven furlongs and thereby won £l7O. Maidos swelled his stake money contributions at the hunt meeting, which was sandwiched in between the two days of the major fixture, by winning the steeples, which raised his contribution by £IBO. Seconds to Royal Land and Wanderlust was the stable’s portion at Dannevirke, while a second and a third to Shining Star and Fee Simple respectively in the maiden event at the Manawatu Hunt followed. PAYABLE TRIPS The visit to Otaki proved a lucrative one, for although Shining Star had to be content with a second and a third at his two starts, Duke Abbey scored a meritorious victory in a hack seven, while Crown Area gathered in £ 320 by reason of his two victories in the open sprints. These outings paved the way for a descent upon Trentham, where, following a second by Wanderlust on the opening day, this horse, together with Blimp and Duke Abbey, annexed major placings on the concluding day, while Fee Simple ran a second, the stable’s portion in stake money from the trip being £620. The recent visit to Riccarton likewise proved lucrative, although it might well have proved more so had Crown Area and Fee Simple kept right, unforeseen mishaps necessitating these two being brought home prior to the conclusion of the fixture. Duke Abbey and Wanderlust both scored on the opening day, while Crown Area ran second to Eulalie in the Stewards, but there, save in the case of Wanderlust, who added a third, the run of successes halted. Nevertheless, another £6OO was added in stake money. Thus of a team of nine horses which have raced in public, all save one hase been stakeearners, the exception being a youngster by Gasbag. * Six have gained major successes, and tw’o minor successes, the record of the stable to date being 33 firsts, 8 seconds and 3 thirds, the total stake money earned being £2310. Crown Area, the one candidate who has been racing in open company, has contributed £560 from two firsts and a second. Wanderlust £540 from three wins and three seconds, Duke Abbey £530 from three wins, Blimp £220 from two wins, Royal Land £l9O from a first and a second, Maidos £IBO from two wins, Fee Simple £6O from two seconds and a third, and Shining Star £3O from two seconds and a third. It is a great start for the season.
