Rumanians Cheer Acquittal of Minister
TRIAL FOR TREASON STREET DISTURBANCES By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 10.37 a.m. BUCHAREST, Tues. TN the trial for treason of M. Manoilescu, former Undersecretary of Finance, the judges deliberated till 2 o’clock in the morning and acquitted him by three votes to two. The crowd in the ' court cheered frantically and demonstrations broke out in the city, necessitating armed patrols to keep order. It is stated that Professor Jorga, leader of the Nationalists, warned the Court that if Manoilescu was convicted the army would feel compelled to take charge of the government of the country. The trial of Manoilescu, was connected with his conveyance into Ru mania of letters from the ex-Crown Prince Carol. The defence claimed that M. Manoilescu was loyal to the throne, and had done nothing unlawful. He never had treasonable ideas, nor had he planned a rising. He went to Paris on private business, and his action in bringing back letters from Carol was merely incidental. Carol only wished to return as Regent for his son, King Michael.—A. and N.Z.
