SUMMER GOLF
NEW TE KUITI LINKS (From Our Own Correspondent) TE KUITI, Monday. The increasing popularity of golf ms a summer pastime was reflected in the large number of members and visitors present at the official opening of the links of the newly-formed Burnside Golf Club, at Te Kuiti on Saturday last. The president of the club, Mr. J. W. Cochrane, in extending a welcome to the visitors and members, said the club had been formed to meet the desire of local golfers who wished to indulge in their favourite pastime all the year round. The club was fortunate in having the assistance of Mr. M. Fennell, Waitomo county engineer, and Mr H. Rothery. in the work of draining" and cambering the course. The object of the club was to provide a flrst-clas course in every respect. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, in congratulating the new club on its enterprise, said that in taking over the racecourse, the club had a permanency of tenure, a beautiful location, and. in addition, there were facilities for entertaining visitors. After dulv declaring the links open, the Mayor called on the president to drive the first ball, and the afternoon was spent in a mixed foursome competition. which was won by Mrs. Evans and Mr. Andrews with a score of 31. An orchestra was in attendance, and afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies on the clubhouse verandahs. The membership of the club nowtotals over 70.
