WHEN THE DAWN MAID APPEARED TO MORTALS AS A BUTTERFLY
TTENE-TE-TAMA was the dawn maid of the Maoris. Incantations to her were performed in the kumera fields at early dawn. That was the time when frosts might be feared. The rising suri dispelled the fogs and the mists that until sunrise protected the fields from frosts. It was thought that Hene-te-Tama, the dawn maid, appeared to mere mortals in the undeveloped state of the caterpillar, until, eventually, she became the complete and beautiful butterfly. And that was why the koro-pepe, a native ornament worn around the neck in the old days, explained Mr. George Graham to the Auckland Institute last evening, was made in .the form of the grub of the butterfly.
