OWNERS AND THEIR BOATS

Mr. “Alby” Braund’s fine launch Mavis B. took the water on Saturday afternoon. She is looking spic and span in her new paint. The Nairobi is looking very well. A very good job has been made of her painting and the general refitting. All is ready for moving her seaward. Valeria, the 22-foot mullet boat, owned by Mr. Jack McWhirter, was also launched on Saturday and made good pace on a trial spin on Sunday. Work on Mr. F. Scott’s launch Areta is proceeding steadily. The engine overhaul is completed, and the hull painting is going ahead favourably at the hands of Mr. Arthur Tupp. ... Satisfactory progress is being made on Mr. Steward's motor-launch Duchess. The interior and top sides are about finished, while work on the cabin top and deck is being pushed on. * * * Mr. Jack Wilcox’s 22-foot mullet boat Otira went down from Cox’s Creek last Thursday. He bought his ship not long ago from Mr. “Whit” Riley and was previously owner of Waiapu. The old-timer Yum Yum is looking in good nick. Mast and spars have been scraped, and the final paint applied to the outside surfaces. Preparations are being made for launching this weekend. • * • Ariki is keeping a few hands very busy at present. The white top sides have been well rubbed down with glass paper, and the bottom pumiced off. Repairs to the rudder were made by the fitting of a new stock. • • * A start has been made on Mr. C. G. Macindoe's big launch Lady Una. The 150 horse-power Van Blerck motor is at present receiving a thorough overhaul. A start on the hull painting will be made in a day or two. « « * The once champion 20ft. mullet boat Ngaro, now an auxiliary belonging to the Rev. Jasper Calder, has been thoroughly overhauled at Lane’s. She is painted dark chocolate on top and sides, with a grey bottom. • • • Mr. Gifford was fortunate enough to secure a splendid piece of Oregon for the mast of his crack rating rule yacht Rawene. (Wiis was stepped last Thursday, and no doubt will improve her sail set in a breeze. • , * The new stock has been fitted to the rudder of Mr. A. Buchanan’s keel yacht Rainbow, and it has also been found necessary to renew the trunk. A suitable piece of timber has been secured for a new mast and work on this important member is well advanced. • • • Mr. Patsy Butler’s fine launch Nomad was hauled out at the squadron’s slipway last week after a spell of eighteen months afloat. Preparations are being made to overhaul the six-cylinder engine, while the hull above the waterline outside is already receiving a complete burn-off. • • * Mr. W. Sinclair launched his fine new cruiser Paloma last Staurday. On Sunday he went for a run down harbour and expressed himself satisfied with his boat’s performance. Paloma is replete with many new mechanical devices and electric fittings for the comfort of her crew, and is in every way a wonder ship. Mr. Lou Jenkinson’s Ida will take the water a much-improved cruiser this summer. A raised cabin top will be fitted, giving much-needed headroom in the main cabin. The process of cutting away the flush decking is now proceeding apace. The mast has also received the required waterproof dressing and the hull painting is just about completed. * * * Mr. Speight’s Wairiki is looking more like her old self. The finishing coat of white has been applied to the top sides, and the anti-fouling mixture to the bottom surfaces. Mast and spars have been well cleaned down with the steel and the deck painting finished. Only the gilding of the streak remains to complete the refit of this good handicap performer. • • * During the process of shifting the Esther G from her winter quarters on to the trolly an unfortunate accident occurred. The stern of Mr. Glass’s craft struck the stem of Mr. Cammick’s launch Avillion, and severely damaged it. Practically the whole stem from the waterline to the deck had to be cut away and a new piece of hardwood butted up in its place.
