LATE TURF
ELLERSLIE NOTES QUIET MORNING’S WORK Fast work was not much in evidence at Ellerslie this morning-, trainers preferring to give their charges light tasks. Weather Conditions were not very pleasant, light showers having a dampening effect. The course proper (one trestle out) and the Xo. 2 grass were in use, while the sand and tan were also available. COURSE PROPER Avon Court gave Red Lion and Catonian a slight break over three furlongs and finished on terms with them in 37 3-5. War Officer had an advantage over a companion over half a mile in 50 4-5. Pompieus, on the outside berth, and The Lover, were given a spin over five furlongs. They took 25 2-5 for the first two furlongs, and came home in 1.6 2-5. Pompieus appeared to be going much the better at the end. Nankin Blue,* Kotahi and Camp Prince were associated in a spurt over three furlongs in 40 2-5. Lord Guy and Royal Trek were sent over half a mile, which they left behind in 53. Royal Ensign proved too good for White Light over four furlongs, run in 52 3-5. No. 2 GRASS. Bahama and Scaramouche were the first to appear and they covered half a mile in 54 3-5. Whaka King was not timed to beat Salamander over half a mile. Antrim Boy was responsible for a good gallop in taking 49 for half a mile. He looks all the better for the outing he had at the Thames meeting. The Fox took 54 for half a mile, while Storm' Fiend was sent over a similar distance in 50. Miss New Zealand gave Spalmoor a break and finished on terms in a-half mile spin. They took 55 for the journey. MUCH ADO SEQUEL TO ROWLEY CASE COMMITTEE’S VOLTE FACE Pres* Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Referring to the Rowley disqualification case, Mr. A. T. Donnelly, one of the Racing Conference judges which upheld the appeals of the trainer and jockey, writes to the Press replying to Mr. George Gould, chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Mr. Donnelly says: “The advantage of a judicial committee approaching its cases in a logical and orderly fashion can easily be demonstrated. Mr. Gould was chairman of the Judicial Committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, which on Monday, November 7, unanimously convicted the owner of Rowley of corrupt practice. “Mr. Gould was chairman also of the District Committee, which, on the following day, November 8, on the same evidence, unanimously acquitted the owner of Rowley of the same offence by allowing his appeal against his conviction the day before. A member of the District Committee gave evidence as a witness before the Judicial Committee on November 7. He saw the finish of the race, but stated that h© was unable to say that the horse was ‘pulled’ or that it was not ridden to win. This member of the District Committee was a party to its unanimous decision convicting the jockey and trainer of offences charged against each of them. “Racing inquiries throughout the country have generally been conducted in the past on the broad principles which govern proceedings in courts of law. No departure from these principles,. I hope and feel sure, will ever be sanctioned by a decision of judges of the conference.”
