RAKINO ISLAND
OPTION BY COUNCIL RUMOUR DENIED A report that an option of purchase over Rakino Island had been obtained by the Auckland City Council was denied by the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, yesterday afternoon. The possibility of obtaining Motuihi Island, the present quarantine station, as a sports and recreation reserve, was considered some time ago by the council and an endeavour made to induce the Government to tarnsfer the quarantine station to some other available island which would just as readily serve the purpose. The proposal, however, did not meet with Government approval and the suggestion has since been made that the council should secure a siutable island to be placed at the disposal of the Health Department in exchange for Motuihi. Rakino Island, which, has an area of approximately 300 acres, lies about lo miles from Auckland in a northeasterly direction from the Rangitoto Beacon.
