Whangarei’s Races a Great Success

CONCLUDING DAY DAVE GETS HOME TWICE The AVhangarei Racing Club’s spring meeting concluded on Saturday in real summer weather, the sun streaming down with full intensity. The attendance was very large, and probably a record for the course, while the track was in splendid order. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator putting through on Saturday £22,038, compared with £24,097 on the second day of the last spring meeting. The total for the two days was £40,042. against £43,687 last year, a small decrease of £3,645. Notes on the concluding day’s racing, and details of later results, follow. HOT ONE BEATEN Awarere. £784, Dave, £552, and Riilikins, £439, were best supported for the Kauri Handicap. A good start saw Billikins lead along the back from Awarere, Have, Royal Lover, Exalted, and King Leslie. Into the straight Billikins was just in front of Awarere, with Have in behind them, and Royal Lover and Exalted next. In the run home Have got a good run on the rails, and won by half a length from Awarere, with Billikins a similar distance away third. Exalted was well back fourth, and Royal Lover next. THE TWO DIVISIONS Seven in the first, and ten in the second, were the runners in the twodivision race, the Marsden Hack, the market favouring Te Koroke, £604, Himmer, £3BB, Winsome Boy, £346, and Bright Hawn £297. The first division was got away with little delay, Luxurious, Takutama, Hesert Knight, and Billikins being the order out of the tapes. Along the back Takutama went to the front, and was still in charge crossing the top, Billikins being up with him at the home turn, with Hesert Knight, Himmer, Te Koroke, and Bright Hawn following. The favourite came with a fine run in the straight, and got up to beat Billikins by half a length, with Bright Hawn a couple of lengths away third. Takutama was fourth, and Hesert Knight, Luxurious, and Himmer next over the line. There was a long and tedious 3 5 minutes’ delay at the start of the second division, caused by an unruly exhibition by Golden Wedding. A good start eventually saw Winsome Boy hop out smartly from the inside position, followed by Cantab, Carinthia, Golden Wedding, Arch Queen, and Glenetta. At the end of a furlong Golden Wedding had taken up the running from Cantab and Carinthia, followed by Houble Mint, Winsome Boy, and Amos. Golden Wedding was challenged at the furlong post by Winsome Boy, who finished well a length to the good. Golden Wedding was three lengths in front of Double Mint, while Carinthia, Winsome Boy, and Amos were next in order. NED KELLY AGAIN Ned Kelly, £B2O, Lady Cintra, £631, and Lucilius, £ 354, were best backed in Hurdles. Ned Kelly went out as usual to make the pace, being followed over the early stages by Lady Cintra, Wee Marble, and Lucilius, this being the order passing the stands. Along the back Ned Kelly and Lady Cintra were -on terms, but the favourite went away again, the pair being followed into the straight by Lucilius, Scot Free, and Gold Rep. Lady Cintra threw out another challenge to the favourite in the straight, the latter being kept going, to win by a long neck. Gold Rep was eight lengths back, finishing fast over the last three furlongs. Lucilius was fourth, and Scot Free and Wee Marble next in order. Te Tahi fell at the hurdle in front of the stands giving W. Rowe a heavy spill, and he was bruised by the fall. GALA DAY ALL THE WAY Helightment was withdrawn from the Park Handicap. Gaia Day, £864. Eden Hall, £847, Sleepy Sol, £613, and Quincoma, £ 523, being the best backed. Gala Hay got the best of the dispatch, leading out of the straight from Sleepy Sol, Athenry, Quincoma, Golden Krist, and Eden Hall, the last-named nearly falling here through some interference. Along the back the favourite was still making the running, with Sleepy Sol, Quincoma, Golden Krist, and Eden Hall following, there not being a great deal between them. Gala Day was in charge as the field came into the straight, Sleepy Sol, Quincoma, Athenry, and Golden Krist being next in order. Once straightened up, Gala Hay was challenged by Sleepy Sol, but, ridden out, won by a length and aquarter. Five lengths away was Quincoma, with Golden Krist and Athenry next in order. When the field was going »ut of the straight Eden Hall met with interference. It transpired that Sleepy Sol carne over a bit, and brought Athenry in on Eden Hall and Quincoma. At the subsequent inquiry Green was cautioned for unnecessarily using his whip during the occurrence. A FINE FINISH All started in the Kamo Handicap, Tresillian, £ 645, Ulingar, £ oil, and Furore, £SOO, carrying the most money. Houhora began best, and led round the bend from Furore, Tresillian, Illingar, Comet King, Quaestor, and Just Quietly. There was little change along the back, and into the straight the order was Houhora, Tresillian, Furore, Comet King, Ulingar, and Just Quietly. At the distance Tresillian headed the leaders, and, staving off late challenges by Illingar and Just Quietly, won by half a length, a similar distance separating the latter pair. Comet King was fourth, and Scrap of Paper and Furore next. MISS POTOA’S BIG SURPRISE Twelve started in the Titoki Handicap, Royal Houlton, £673, Macroom, £550, and Baby Bun. £477, carrying most money. A good start saw Baby Bun take charge early from Hay taro, Taurimu, Piet, Miss Potoa, and Royal Houlton, this being the order . along the back. As they started to come across the top, Macroom and Miss Potoa moved up, this pair being in charge into the straight from Baby Bun and Royal Houlton. Miss Potoa was quickly in the van when they straightened up, and, surviving Royal Doulton’s challenge, went on, to get the verdict by three-parts of a length. Four lengths away was Taurimu, and the next to finish were Macroom, Bannock, and Alonsoa. The winner was only eighth fancied, and paid a good double-figure dividend. DAVE COMPLETES DOUBLE The five acceptors came out for the President’s Handicap, High Finance, £Bll, being a hot favourite. Have, £ 354, and Awarere, £ 263, were best backed of the others. Have, Awarere, and High Finance left the barrier together, but along the back Awarere and High Finance were out in front, well clear of Have, with Exalted next, and Serang last. Serang moved up crossing the top, Awarere and High Finance piloting Have into the straight. Have again got through on the rails, to beat the opposition by a neck, Serang getting up into second place a similar distance ahead of Awarere. High Finance was fourth. The winner was penalised 31b for his earlier success. SCAT TAKES THE FINAL There were seven runners in the concluding race, the Farewell Handicap. and from the opening of the machine nobody would have anything but Scat. The favourite began well, and was just behind Ballachulisli

rounding the bend going out of the straight, the pair being followed by Uralla, Right and Loft, Eh Timi, and Wenday, the last-named being wide out. Scat took charge at the halfmile, and led into the straight, attended by Right and Left, Wenday, Golden Krist, Eh Timi, and Uraila. The leaders bunched at the bottom of the straight, but Scat came away, to beat Uralla. by a neck, with Golden Krist a similar distance away. Wenday was a good fourth.
