“DICK” TOOK THE COUNT: AND KNEW THE SEASON HAD STARTED IN EARNEST!

TjICK ROUNTREE, the evergreen Auckland stumper, was on duty at Devonport on Saturday for his first appearance this season after a trip Home, where he enjoyed meeting the New Zealand cricketers at Scarborough. Dick was once reserve wicketkeeper for Yorkshire, and showed on Saturday that his hands have lost none of their cunning, until nearing the close of a long day in the field, when an unexpected fast “kicker” from Olsen got up suddenly and caught Rountree fairly on the point of the chin. Dick sagged to the ground for the full count in orthodox ring style, and, after the dicky birds ceased singing, the veteran woke up to resume business as usual, with a pointed remark to the effect that he knew now the season had begun.
