PHYSICS AND LITERATURE AWARDS ANNOUNCED By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright. STOCKHOLM, Thursday. The Nobel prize for physics for 1921 has been jointly awarded to Professor Arthur Compton, of Qhicago, and Professor Charles Rees Wilson, of Cambridge. The literature prize for 1926 has been awarded to the Italian woman novelist, Signorina Grazia Deledda.— A. and N.Z.-Sun. Professor A. R. Compton was born in Ohio in 1882. He is an eminent American phycist. He discovered changes in the wave-lengths of X-rays when scattered. and made the first wave-lengt.* measurement of hard g?mma rays. He was Professor of Physics at Washington University, 1920-23, and since then he has held the same position at Chicago University. During the war he was civilian associate of the United States Signal Corps, and developed several new airplane instruments. He has written numerous articles on scientific subjects. Professor C. T. Rees Wilson is a Fclow of Sidney Sussex College, CambridP*He was born in 1569 in Scotland. Since 1895 he has been at the Sidney ******** College, engaged in research work ' a condensation of nuclei, ions and atmoepheric electricity. Signorina Grazia Deledda, the authoress, was horn in 1875. Her to are largely on the theme of Sardinian peasant life.
