“Rest” Batting on Soft Wicket
STEADY SCORING BLEAK, COLD WEATHER Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. I The weather is bleak and on the | cold side for the opening of the New j Zealand v. The Rest cricket match toi day. The wicket is soft after the i rain. Bowley and Newman opened the j Rest's innings against the bowling of j McGirr and Bernau and runs came I quietly. Bowley was the more ag- ' gressive. Bernau sent down several i loose ones and these Bowley got right on to, driving and hooking to the fence. At 21 Blunt replaced Bernau. The fielding was ragged. Alleott. went on the other end, but the scoring still went on steadily with both batsmen playing round and punishing anything loose. At 38 (Bowley 25, Newman 12) Page took the ball from Blunt, bowling “leg theory,’’ and keeping the batsmen quiet. Details: —Bowley. not out, 2G; Newman, not out, 17; total 43.
