DRAMA OF THE SEA

CAPTURE OF SMUGGLERS SHIP FOUNDERS IN GALE By Cable. — Prest A-tsoclatlon.—Copyright RIGA, Monday. At the height of a gale the Lithuanian patrol-ship Premident Smetons sighted a vessel whicn was acting suspiciously off the Baltic Coast. On approaching the stranger she was recognised as a former German destroyer. The vessel failed to answer signals and owing to her superior speed escaped. Later, coastguards sighted the destroyer and fired on her. The 3hots apparently crippled her engines, for she surrendered to the President Smetons as soon as the latter hove in sight. A prize crew was placed on !>oaid the destroyer and the latter discovered they had captured a desperate gang of smugglers who for months past had succeeded in landing large cargoes of spirits on the Lithuanian and Latvian coasts. The President Smetons commenced to tow the prize to port, but the hawser parted and the destroyer foundered with the Lithuanian prize crew on board. Hans Hofmeister, captain of the smugglers, was the sole survivor. He was washed ashore unconscious. The coast is strewn with wreckage and casks of spirits. Hofmeister, on recovering, said the destroyer was the Hafenvier, formerly of Danzig.—A. and N.Z. ■■
