FLATLY CONTRADICTED

MEMBER’S OBJECTION TO POWER LOAN OVER-RULED BY RESIDENTS When members of local bodies claim to speak with authority on behalf of their respective districts, and they often do, it is essential that they should be thoroughly acquainted with the wishes of their constituents—lest they be contradicted. TN raising a strong objection to the -*■ proposal of the Waitemata Power Board to raise a loan of £ SO.OOO, Mr. H. Day, who represents the Albany district on the Waitemata Power Board stated that his district would never get power or be served by the board. Despite the suggestion made by his fellow-members that he should adopt a spirit of self-reliance and see if his district could find the necessary i\ per cent- revenue to run a line out to Albany, Mr. Day declined to withdraw his opposition, and with others, formally protested to the Local Bodies’ Loan Board against authorising the taking of a loan poll. The Loans Board replied that since the only objection Mr. Day made was that the Power Board would not run an unprofitable line, it unanimouslv concluded that it must be conducting its affairs on business lines, and forthwith authorised the loan poll. The residents of Albany and the neighbourhood have now further discomfited their board representative by finding the needed 12 1 per cent, revenue guarantee to have the power line erected.
