Mr. Wharfe has forgotten more than most men ever knew about both the marketing and production of kauri gum. He was born at Port Albert, right on the fields, and as a boy of seven earned his first pocket money scraping gum. It was on the fields that he first started out to make'a living for himself, and early established a name as the champion “ climber Ji of the North. He earned the name by his ability at scaling the giant kauris and tapping them for gum. About '22 years ago Mr. Wharfc decided to try'his hand at the marketing end of the business and opened up a small store in Customs Street, Auckland. Since then, backed up by a large connection with the diggers and a reputation for straight dealing, he has never looked back. To-day his warehouse in 'Victoria Street West contains four floors piled with gum. He has a strong connection with the world’s leading markets and is in constant communication with overseas buyers*
