AT WHANGAREI
To-Morrow and Saturday FIRST DA Y’S CARD UNDER THE LIGHT THERE WILL BE A PROXOUXCED TREK XORTHWA RDS TOMORROW OX THE PART OF AUCKLAXD SPORTSMEN. FOR THEY WILL BE EXTEXDIXG THEIR PATROXAGE TO THE WHAXGAREI CLUB, WHICH RACES TO-MORROW AXD 0\ SATURDAY. THIS FIXTURE PROMISES TO BE .4 DECIDED SUCCESS
THERE is something about the A Wliangarei fixtures that makes a big appeal to sportsmen from this end, and this is generally reflected in the large number of visitors that patronise the meetings. With indications pointing to a most successful gathering this week, it is only reasonable to expect that the usual representation, plus a few others, will be found on the scene of operations to-morrow and on Saturday. Quite a fine list of acceptances has been received for the opening day s racing, and the racing should be most
interesting, for in the two leading events some splendid handicap horses are engaged. In the shorter races the draw at the barrier will play -an important part so far as the eventual result goes, for smart beginners will have a good deal in their favour on this small course. However, the runin is not the shortest in the country by a long way, this straight being a furlong and a-half long. The plan of the course prodaieed here will give stay-at-home followers of the game an idea. The club has taken advantage of daylight saving, and the first event will not commence until 12.45 p.m. A review of to-morrow’s card follows. First on the programme is the -12.45 SPRING PLATE Of £115; 6 furlongs * Glenetta . . . Royal Lover . Double Mint . Brampton . . Bombarder . . Welcome • Diamond Home . . . - Queen .... Royal Seagull Ponticus . . . Pidurman . . Amos Exalted . . . Wee Marble . King Leslie . Tai Kawhana Gazarn .... Bannock . . . Bailey Damon Royal Joke Form . Edifice .... Mosque It is a big field for the track, and the more experienced horses should have an advantage. There are some fair hacks engaged, as well as a good many unknown quantities. Those better known are Double Mint, Bombarder, Diamond Queen, Tai Kawhana, Royal, Brampton, Exalted, and Bally Damon, and the remainder may be classed as the great unknown. Given a good marble, the public will probably declare for BOMBARDER, BRAMPTON, and EXALTED. I.3O—KESSINGTON HACK HANDICAP. Of £l4O. S furlongs. st. lb. st. lb. Tea Time is particularly fast at this distance, and lie won easily at Wanganui a couple of months ago in good company. Judge’s Box is running into form, while Desert Knight and Billikins are good sorts if well forward. Respirator won nicely at the Thames meeting at Ellerslie, and it will be remembered that the grey Dimmer got on the winning list twice at this course in the autumn. Royal Doulton will be heavily supported if sent to the post, for she has a lot of pace. Taurimu won at Te Rapa last month, and is on the up-grade. Golden Wedding, Miss Potoa, Creation, and Speechless comprise the remainder of the possibilities, of whom there are many. The favourites may be ROYAL DOULTON and TEA TIME. 2.10—H UAN U I HACK HURDLES. Of 160sovs. 1J miles and 197yds. Slump showed at Te Rapa that
e is coming to hand, and Mangan ho does not appear to be a weight
carrier, lias his full share, but now meets his conqueror. Queen Emerald, on 131 b better tei'uis. This should very nearly bring them together, blit of course reasonable allowance must be made for the improvement expected to be made by Queen Emerald. Ned Kelly shows promise, and he will run a good race. Lucilius was expected to run better at the Thames fixture than he did. Lady Cintra is well spoken of at this branch of the game, but Wee Marble, if not made too much use of. will complete the course. Scot Free, Marita and Master Arch are in light, and the last-mentioned ran a fair race at Ellerslie last Monday week. MAN GAN I. QUEEN EMERALD, and WEE MARBLE promise to be best supported. 3.O—W HANGAREI CUP Of 550sovs. 1 mile 3 furlongs. Mosaic .... 9 0 Sleepy Sol . 7 §
Eden Hall S I> Ballachulish 7 0 Delightment S 6 Golden Krist 7 0 Gala Day . 7 13 Athenry ..70 Papatu ... 7 5 At the head of affairs is the consistent Mosaic, whose last five starts have seen him first on two occasions, and with a second and two thirds it is eloquent testimony of his sameness, for he is not a big: fellow. To-morrow he has 41b more than when he finished third at Ellerslie to Gala Day and In The Shade. Eden Hall has not been very prominent in his recent engagements, although it must not oe forgotten that but for striking trouble twice he might have been returned the winner of the Waikato Cup. Another point to be remembered is that 12 months ago Eden Hall won the principal event both days. Horses for courses, you know. Next is the hardworked Delightment, and it is reported that only on a soft track will he run. Then he would be considerably fancied: otherwise he will be spelled, for he has well earned a good rest. Gala Day is at the top of his form, as witness his win at Ellerslie last Monday week. Dangerous is the label to apply to this Ellerslie representative. Papatu likes the sting out of the ground, and if he gets it this way will be hard to beat, for he was galloping brilliantly before the Thames meeting. Sleepy Sol is taking on the best, and his chances in the last race are preferred. Ballachulish won on this course last autumn, but in the interim he has failed to show his true form. Golden Krist and Athenry complete
the field, and both have light-weight’s chances, the latter being very well. That completes the review of the '.'up candidates, and when summing them up on the machine EDEN HALL, GALA DAY. and MOSAIC may be found carrying most of the money. 3.4 S—COUNTY HANDICAP Of 125sovs. 6 furlongs. Exalted, who is aiso in the opening event, had a. lot of speed as a two-year-old last season, as one might expect of anything by Leighton, and the opportunity is presented here, even more than in the Spring Plate, of making amends for past| failures. The three-year-old may be i a better favourite than QUAESTOR. 4.2S—HIKURANGI HANDICAP Of 135sovs. 7 furlongs. Te Koroke . 9 5 Golden

This event has filled splendidly, for there are some smart performers engaged. Among these can be named Te Koroke, Alonsoa, Rarakau, Macroom, Baby Bun, Whakarite, Arch Queen, Royal Boulton, Auriculus, Golden Wedding, a-nd Creation. The favoured division should come from ! among this bunch, with backers ex- ! pressing a preference for RARAKAU and BABY BUN. S.S—MANAIA HANDICAP Of 250sovs. 6 furlongs. Nancy Lee has a steadier to carry, paying for her dual victory over High Finance at Ellerslie recently, and the Paper Money filly now comes in on 81b better terms. The shorter straight will be in favour of High Finance, and she is given the opportunity of acting the leading role. Dave ran well at the Thames meeting, and if he is not ready now he will not be long. Awarere has already expressed a preference for this track, and should go well. Serang has shown a welcome return to form, and if sent for this instead of the last race will be well suppported. Scat, Te Koroke, Macroom, and Namutere complete the field, which may be summed up by backers this way: HIGH FINANCE and NANCY LEE. S.SO—PARAKAHI HANDICAP Of 150sovs. 1 mile. These are j Serang, Athenry, and Sleepy Spl. Much ! depends upon whether this trio will run in this race, for any one of the three might well wind up favourite. Quincoma has been running into form of late, while Wenday was a winner at Cambridge last month, and Eh Tiini went all right at the Thames meeting while his condition lasted. With
THE ROWLEY CASE
OWNER’S APPEAL SUCCEEDS TRAINER AND JOCKEY FAIL FURTHER APPEALS TO CONFERENCE (Special to THE SEX.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesda, The appeals to the Canterbury trict Committee against the two'v, v disqualification imposed upon McDonald and R. S. Bagbv, owner u-ainc- r fS ;,,:a,V ■■w-r the
of the racehorse Rowley in the Rj.carton Handicap on Saturday last, and against the 12 months’ suspension of A. Parker, the apprentice jockey concerned. were heard to-day. After hearing lengthy evidence the District Committee arrived at the f c j. lowing conclusion: — „ “The District Committee finds that the horse Rowley was deliberately pulled in the Riccarton Handicap. It further finds that R. S. Bagby was responsible for the instructions given to the jockey which resulted in the pulling of the horse. There is no direct evidence implicating Mr. McDonald in the pulling of the horse, or that he backed any other horse in the race The committee therefore exculpates Mr. McDonald, but disallows the appeals of R. S. Bagby and A. Parker.” It is the intention of R. S. Bashv and A. Parker to appeal to the Neer Zealand Racing Conference against the ruling of the Judicial Committee or the Canterbury Jockey Club.
Mechanical HorseRacing New Sport
RIVAL TO THE TIN RARE The tin hare has a rival. The new sport is mechanical horse racing and was introduced at the Green Mill, a popular Melbourne city dance hall. The horses, which are life-size, are mechanically propelled, but are liable to dwell at the barrier, buck during the race, or so many other tricks practised by thoroughbreds, Skill in ridinz the horses by means of the reins 'nil! play a large part in the success of the race. Recently leading jockeys, includin; Billy Foulsham, George Harrison. J. Pike, S. Davidson and J. Toohey rod? the mechanical horses. RACING STORYETTE
IN EIGHT PARTS (Contributed by P.E.) Michael thought he would take Miss Potoa to the races. She had on a Creation of a hat that her mother had worn at her Golden Wedding. As the weather was Ballychulisli. she wore a Royal blue overcoat, which Just Quietly, she had received from her Royal Lover, King Leslie. After the first race, Miss Potoa was Exalted at her horse winning, so during the second race, which was Tea
Time, they inspected the Judge’s Bo*. While the hurdlers were preparing to start, there seemed to be a Slump in the betting, so they waited until the Cup race, which to the Delightment of the crowd, was won by the favourite. The next race had a local flavour about it, and as the favourite ran nowhere, they heard a Few-roar (Furore about non-triers! . Michael backed bis namesake in seven furlongs hack, but he col “ d *V, get Alonsoa (along so) they P* 011 him third.
