PISTOL EXPLODED IN CONSTABLE’S BELT
ACCIDENTAL DEATH IS VERDICT AT AUSTRALIAN INQUEST
By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.30 a.m. CANBERRA, To-day. According to information received from the Home Territories Department regarding the death of Constable Clapp, Clapp was arresting a man on a charge of supplying liquor to a half-caste.
He took a pistol from him, and stuck it in his own belt. As he did so it exploded. The bullet pierced an artery in the constable’s leg, and he died in a few minutes. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.—A. and N.Z.
A Darwin cablegram yesterday read as follows: —“A message from Katherine states that Mounted Constable Clapp, while bringing a prisoner to Katherine, was ambushed and shot. He died on the way to Katherine. Details are meagre. Clapp was responsible for many prosecutions at Marranboy. It is stated that a threat of violence had been made. Another report states that Clapp arrested a prisoner, and took a revolver from him, which he stuck in his belt, and which accidentally went off.”
