IDLE SHIPPING SOLUTION.— It is stated on good authority, remarks the “Nautical Gazette,” of New York, that* experts consulted by the United States I Government have found a wav to convert some of the old slow nine-knot boats .of the laid-up fleet into fast 13 to 15knot cargo liners. The proposal i.«f to fine down the lines at bow and stern and replace the present propelling plant; a special type of screw. By adopting small Diesels, the experts state, quantity production is possible with propor- ! tionately low attendant cost. It is estimated that the cost of this recondi- I tioning will be no more than 60 per cent. ! of the cost of a new ship built in j America, and at least 20 per cent, below j cost of a new ship built abroad. If; these figures can In* substantiated, and • the tests lead to the conclusion that they j can be. then here is possible one solo - ! tion of America's merchant marine problem. • •—* *
