Drive for £5,000 for Unemployed
CAMPAIGN TO-MORROW*
"HELP THE CANVASSERS” A four-day drive throughout the entire city will commence to-mor-row with the object of raising £5,000 for the relief of unemployed. On the amount raised a Government subsidy will be applied for. and the whole amount will probably be spent on the development of the athletic stadium at Western Springs. The £5,000 drive will be entirely separate from the present Mayor’s fund, which has reached a total of over £4.400, and which is being spent on various other city reserves, much of the amount having been expended already. EXPENSES KEPT DOWN Since the formation of the Citizens’ Sub-committee, organisation work has been going on steadily. The city has been mapped out into areas and workers alloted to each. Representative business men have been selected to canvass small portions of the city, and the sum total of their efforts from Wednesday until Friday should result in a very conisderable portion of the amount being raised, especially as many firms who have been notified from the mayoral office have decided upon their subscription, and will have the amount ready when the official representatives of the Mayor’s fund call. On Saturday morning a drive in the suburbs will be carried out with boxes, and here again it is hoped that householders will save time and have their subscriptions ready. On Friday evening. in the Civic Square, a concert will be given by the Auckland Municipal Band from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., and flowers, which have been donated, .will be seld on behalf of the fund throughout the day. ASSIST THE COLLECTORS
The whole success of the movement depends upon the willing co-operation of givers. The Government has agreed to subsidise every pound up to £II,OOO, and therefore every £ 1 that is given is equal to £2 so far as the unemployed are concerned. The fact that there have been other subscription lists and other collections during the past few months should not be allowed to weigh, especially as the amount raised by these efforts was muh less than the promoters required. The committee confidently trusts that the public will respond to such an extent that the full amount of the subsidy will be taken up and the works contemplated carried out without delay. They feel that every business man should recognise the importance to trade in general of spending this sum on relief works.
