CONVENT SCHOOL CONCERT
ENTERTAINMENT BY PUPILS
An excellent concert and dramatic recital was given last evening in the Town Hall concert chamber by scholars of St. Mary’s Convent High School, Ponsonby. • The entertainment was arranged in aid of the building fund and, judging from the fact that the hall was crowded to capacity, the fund should benefit considerably. The high standard of artistry displayed by the performers, particularly in the Shakespearean selections, reflect great credit on the girls and their tutors.
The college orchestra was heard to fine effect in its overtures and revealed careful and conscientious practice. The school choir also delighted the audience with two numbers, “On Wings of Song” (Mendelssohn) and “Good Morning,” composed by Lillo. The scene from “As You Like It” was played by Miss Zita Berglian, Duke Frederick; Miss Alice McGuire, Rosalind; Miss Mary Wathew, Celia. The characters in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” were portrayed by the Misses Kathleen Twohill (Oberon), Inez Dean (Titania), Mollie I-loban (Bottom), Lenore Piggot (Puck), Doncce O’Brien (Pease-Blossom), Lora Webb (Cobweb). Ruth Somervell (Mustard-Seed), and Gwen Letton (fairy attendant). Other items included rhythmic dancing by pupils and vocal and instrumental numbers by scholars and assisting artists.
