Speed Kings in Action
AT ADDINGTON TO-MORROW
Great Racing Anticipated
FOLLOWING on the general excitement occasioned by the New Zealand Cup contest on Saturday, patrons of the =ister sport will have their turn to-morrow when the Metropolitan Trotting Club will submit a splendid card of interring events, chief among which is the richly endowed
. ves of the trotting world will 1 ii' focussed on Christchurch dur--1 week, when the three days' “ fixture of the New Zealand Met!P r1 "* c i u b comes up for decision. ropo Is the king-pin meeting of the Pinion, and its progress is keenly D° n,,nl d t,y light-harness enthusiasts ftUo «Sout the Southern Hemisphere, which is a most at- - I,ivs one. has been reviewed on sevfflfoccasions in THE SUN, and our sens are familiar with its import- » and conditions. The acceptances 3 well up to the high-water mark of “Hinus fixtures, and the class enP re ", in each section is of the, very £f t standard. The first event to attract attention will be the SPRING HANDICAP (in harness), , ov3 . Unhoppled troUers ; class t* J 3.34. One mile and a half.
fourteen square trotters are raided this set-to. w ith -Nelson McKinney, .ho has been threatening of late to xTthincs. on the end, by himself. Kat--1 and Lady Fan are another pair dlie to break the ice, and if the for- “ r has become solid she will be best of the front bunch. Nourmanal should be nice and fresh and able 10 put forth a good effort, and of those , us t behind her. Heal the Great will L a tough proposition. He is very we ll just now. Nigh born was the icnie of consistency at National time, rt nd is sure to have a lot of friends. If Herbilwin had the O.K. sign it would be hard for the others to get the thick ,nd. and then the Reeftonite Cannonball is one to be reckoned on. He is a good sort. The public may select as favourites Real the Great, Cannonball and Katute. The saddles will then be in evidence u the contestants get ready to parade for the * ST. ALBANS HANDICAP (in saddle ), Of 300 sovs. Class 2.15. One mile.
A good field of horses favourable to the weight on top is engaged, with five smart pacers on the front. Any one of these might hop out, but of the quintette High Jinks appeals most. Of those in the next section Pan Yan will he in most demand, and the grey is looked upon as a big possibility in Southern circles. General Bingen must not be overlooked, and there is that good saddle exponent, Final McKinney. The Oamaru pacer is always a danger signal to the opposition over this course. Jewel Pointer is Auckland's hope, and the game, consistent horse will have a host of admirers in the North Island. He can be counted as one of the heads, and his keenest rival will be Author Jinks. The latter is a little dandy in saddle and can fly over eight furlongs. Public opinion
leans toward Author Jinks, Jewel Pointer and Final McKinney. Eyes will he strained to get a view ‘ of the bird-cage when the field parades for the principal event of the calender, the , |
A wealth of speed is stored up among the 18 colouring the race card. A look at the list brings to mind their deeds and prowess. There is Escapade, the wonderful square-gaited mare, who if the pace is set to suit her in the early stages, must take all sorts of beating. Audacious, a great and game stayer and one of the best handicap horses m the Dominion; Locanda Mac. with an Auckland Cup win to his credit; all off the front. And peep just behind the line to the next row, Talaro, a great stake-earner, and one that is never beaten till the post is passed; Logan Chief, with plenty of speed; Peter Bingen, always turning up in the best of company; and Cardinal Logan, a real racehorse, with stamina, speed and dash. Behind this lot, the dazzling Sea Pearl, erratic but speedy Acron, Queen’s Own, a game mare, Kohara, a real dandy, and ready for the fight, and Black Admiral, who is as fit as a fiddle. Great Hope, an ex-Cup winner; Man o’ War, still perky; and Loganwood. a better horse than the majority think, comes next, and then the ! mighty Imprint, who has performed ! deeds in the past worthy of the brand of champion. Behind him is Prince Pointer, who his trainer swears is just as good as Great Bingen, and then the champion himself. Although 84 behind, he is not out of the picture, and will be handy at the finish. But what a contract for Great Bingen, Prince Pointer and Imprint. With such a classy field it certainly looks like those nearer the other end getting the money, and as there are four slices of stake money, the machine may show the order Cardinal Logan, Audacious, Talaro, Black Admiral. The excitement of the great contest over, backers will next turn with a calmer mind to the
A field of 23 docs not make the selection any the lighter, and with a dozen on the limit a good share of the prize money should have a fine chance of being acquired by some of these. Omaha is useful and will soon be stepping in more select company, and Harvest Child and Acre are a likely pair. Epigram has come right and if the roan hits the trail at the first note the others will get dizzy in the chase. This distance should suit Huon Hay, and then there is Genuine, a reliable sort, and Avenger, who when fresh can pull out a heap of speed. Of those further back Harold Burwood and Bob Logan may find most favour. When the figures are adjusted most support may be allotted Epigram, Genuine, and Harold Burwood. The next lot to have the gear arranged is the field for the RICCARTON HANDICAP
Fifteen useful pacers, eight of which figure on the front mark, are likely to measure strides. King Pointer has recent winning form to recommend him, and he will be popular with the crowd. Daytime has been promising to unfurl sufficient speed to get a stake and will have a good chance here. Mate o’ Mine is a good one to be in with, and Wenlo is full of possibilities. If Wairua is right it will be “gloves off,” and no mistake. Then comes Great Actress, a bonny mare that last year gave the impression of turning out the real goods. She is in Withers’s charge and no doubt has made the necessary progress. Pointalena will find the company to her liking, and Henry Logan will not be far from the front when it comes to the final pinch. The public may decide in favour of Great Actress, King Pointer and Daytime. Excitement will be worked up a.-xin to concert pitch when the high-grade square-gaiters parade for the £I,OOO DOMINION HANDICAP
Thirteen is the main in this heat, and nothing appears on the end of the handicap. Of those near the front peg, Klzear will appeal most, and as she will be bracketed with Young Blake, backers will want to be with Tomkinson’s stable. Kola Boy and John Mauritius may find Master Audo carrying too many guns for them, and he is sure to be well in the running. Only one remove is Young Blakf. and he will no doubt soon have the measure of those in front. He is an improving trotter and nicely placed lias every chance to get his name on the honours list. He should ! >cat t Vr others on his mark, too. Peter bwift was in great nick in August ami ma ■ have improved, and Moneyspider is always a host to be reckoned with. He is a great trotter and bound to be on the premises. Trampfast is; a good one, too, but lus task is sol o. Opinion may indicate on the machine Tomkr.son's Elect, Moneyspider, Master Audo. The next event will see the secondarv division of pacers, including some who just failed to earn Cup status, engaged. This is the VICTORIA HANDICAP (in harness)
a , will go to the post for this handicap, which with ns limn |
allows Marshal Neil to go away first. Berkett's horse has not fulfilled his early promise, but he has been often unlucky in his races. If he cannot win off this mark then it will be hai l j for him to get a stake. If Succession strikes form there will be something doing, and Stunt Artist is apt to bring off a surprise any time. Wi.aam the Great will be a tough proposition and he might repeat his Alexandra Park performances. Menember is a bold chap and beat several of those he is now meeting at Wellington in September. Trimmer looks a likely prospect on his Oamaru effort behind Dalnahine and Harold Thorpe, and Dalmeny was coming into his own during National week. Silk Thread will have a lot of supporters, and Billy Sea is on the improve. Those on the end mark are engaged earlier, but Trenand and Tom Thumb are a solid pair. Favouritism may rest with Marshal Neil, Menember, William the Great. The day's sport will he brought to a conclusion with the HAGLEY HANDICAP (in harness)
Fourteen pacers, all worthy of the. name of speed-kings, will test their ability in the final flutter. Four hot members are on the end and they will set a merry pace. Talent can go quick and Fight Ever is always one to be friends with. Harold Thorpe is a fine pacer and will be benefited by his run at Oamaru. A speedy quartette, in St. Maura, Queen’s Own, Golden Devon and Bell Harold, is on the next line, and the former will have most friends. She revels in this distance. Bessie Logan, Jack Potts and Ahuriri are not to be passed by, and perhaps the former pair will be in need of a race. Then there is Bonny Logan, a brilliant mare, Waitaki Girl, and last’ but not least. Native Chief. Truly a team of speed merchants. But they can’t ail win, and the public- may fancy the chances of Harold Thorpe, St. Maura Bonny Logan.
