MRS. J. CAUGHLEY KILLED
CAR’S PLUNGE OVER BANK COLLIDED WITH CYCUST J Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sunday. A sensational and fatal motorcar accident, which occurred this morning, resulted in the death of Mrs. J. Caughley, wife of Mr. J. Caughley, formerly director of education in New Zealand, and recently appointed director of education for Fiji. Mr. Caughley was returning from church in his motor-car, with Mrs. Caughley and three relatives. When turning a corner in Raroa Road, he encountered a youth named Oliver, who was riding a bicycle. Each tried to avoid the other. The car struck the bicycle, and rider, cycle, and motorcar went over a 120 ft bank on to Norway Street below. The car turned over twice during the fall. Mrs. Caughley was jambed beneath the vehicle, and also sustained an injury to her throat. She died on the way to hospital without regaining consciousness. Mr. Caughley received a severe cut across the nose, and the cyclist sustained a fractured ankle, bruises, and shock. The other occupants of the car received bruises and suffered from shock. Mr. Caughley subsequently stated that when the car left the road he tried to keep it so that it would go straight down the hill, but unfortunately it turned on its side, rolled over twice, and landed on the road below. The car was of the limousine type, and it is believed that Mrs. Caughley was looking out one of the windows as it went down the hill. A Press Association message from Wellington on Friday announced Mr. John Caughley’s appointment to Fiji, and stated that he would leave about November 20, being followed after the first rainy season by Mrs. and Miss Caughley.
