COUNTESS TORBY
DEATH OF FAMOUS HOSTESS The death took place recently of Countess Torby, wife of the Grand Duke Michael of Russia, at her residence, 8 Cambridge Gate, Regent’s Park, N.W. She had been ill for some time with heart trouble. Born at Geneva in 1868 she married in 1891 the Grand Duke Michael at Venice, and leaves three children— Lady Zia Wernher, the Marchioness of Milford Haven, and Count Michaelovitch. One who knew the countess well described her as the ideal hostess, and altogether a remarkable personality. She spoke four lanuages—English, Russian, German and French—and her keen sense of humour made her a delightful companion. Her parties at Ken Wood, Hampstead, N.W., where she entertained lavishly up to the time of the Russian Revolution, were of a cosmopolitan character, famous people of many nationalities meeting there. The Grand Duke Michael was originally deprived of his fortune on account of his morganatic marriage with the countess. Before the Russian revolution a portion of it was recovered, but was again taken from him by the Bolsheviks.
