ENGLISH FAST BOWLERS
MAY MISS AUSTRALIAN TOUR By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright, j Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. In view of the breakdown of H. Lar- ; wood, the Notts fast bowler, when play- 1 ing against Lancashire in August, his j ability to stand the strain of an Australian tour has been questioned. A pronouncement by Lord Harris is most interesting. He said: *T think it ; is little use taking a fast bowler to Australia in 1928 unless better than ; past bowlers of the class who have I j taken part in the tour. Experience ■ has shown that most fast bowlers are of little value on Australian wickets. “There is not at present an English bowler likely to distinguish liimself in Australia,” added Lord Harris. ' 4 A number are quite good, but that is all. Sam Staples, of Nottingham, is good, and is able to take advantage of a helpful wicket. Clark, the big Northampton left-hander, who gave a favourable impression in the test trials, is also promising, _ but is not consistent enough, I fancy. The wickets are too good. “Present-day wickets are shirt-front pitches. 1 sometimes regret I did not! recommend a law that a ball pitched ; in line with the wicket and snicked j on the pads should be leg-before.”— | !
