THREE SETS OF TRIALS SWEEP SNAPS IN WAITEMATA FINAL
''PH REE sets of trials were rowed on the Waitemata on Saturday afternoon, when there were delightful overhead conditions and excellent water. The trials were staged by the Auck- j land, Waitemata and West End clubs, j and the most sensational race of the | day was the Waitemata final, in which i McKay stroked to a slashing final a ! crew that had only one effective blade ! on the bow-side. Details of the racing: WAITEMATA CLUB The Waitemata trials were for the Bailey and Lowe Caps, a historic series. The turn-out of new members was particularly creditable, and the six crews were of good standard. The following were the crews: C. Belton *(str), E. E. Cairns, E. Bishop, J. Laurence. A. M. McKay (str), J. H. Russell, J. H. Beasley, T. Wilson. C. G. Fearon (str), H. K. Kenrick, D. Gallagher, F. F. Simmonds. C. B. Read (str). W. Johnson, L. H. Wilson, E. B. Gladding. H. P. Cullen (str), D. Shore, R. Birrell, R. McQueen. J. M. Stevenson (str.), G. Barker, R. Smith, J. K. Hunn. Results:— First Heat.—McKay beat Belton by three lengths. Second Heat.—Read beat Fearon by a canvas. Third Heat.—Stevenson befit Cullen by a length and a-half. Final.—Read 1, McKay 2, Stevenson 3. McKay overtook Read’s early lead, and approaching the eastern wall was leading, and swinging along well, j Russell (No. 3), breaking his oar. With only half the shaft in his hands, Russell continued to swing with the crew, and McKay was only just beaten on the post, Read coming fast on the outside. Stevenson was well back.
AUCKLAND CLUB Club trophies were rowed for by the Auckland Rowing Club, for which five crews again turned out. The crews were: A. Ross (str), R. Mahon, H. Goldwater, E. Thorburn, Dixon (cox). G. Jonson (str), R. Chappell, E. Hill, R. Morton, P. Storey (cox). G. Cleal (str), Andrews, Goldwater, F. Brand, J. Allan (cox). Ross, J. McComish, G. Field, R. Leabourne, J. Dewar (cox). R. Stacey (str), M. Barrett, J. Bygate, T. Morgan, F. Cochran (cox). Results:— First Heat,—Jonson beat Ross by threequarters of a length. Second Heat.—Stacey 1, Ross 2, Cleal 3. Won by inches jn a great finish. Final.—Stacey beat Jonson rather easily. WEST END CLUB Trials were conducted at West End on capital water, for trophies presented by Mr. E. M. Stewart. The crews were: J. Haylock (str.), Snowden, McDonald, Conway, Orrell (cox). O. Felton (str), McFarlane, Suoli, Little, Dowling (cox). Skinner (str), Hadley, Conway, Newdick, Onell (cox). Bright (str.), Dowling, Strange, Soufflot, Dowling (cox). Norden (str), Stratton, Hunter, Bryan and McCarthy (cox). Results:— First Heat.—Haylock beat Felton by two lengths. • Second Heat.—Skinner 1, Bright 2, Norden 3. Final.—Skinner beat Haylock.
