FURTHER CLUB'S OPENED

First Inter-Club Matches

ADDITIONAL greens were thrown open to Auckland bowlers on Saturday afternoon. Several clubs were officially opened. Play was conducted under most ideal conditions with perfect weather, and greens, for the most part, in excellent order. The first inter-club match of the season, one between Mount Eden and Kemuera, was played off on both club s greens. Papatoetoe was also seen in action against Hillsborough on the latter’s green.

OPENING CEREMONIES

EDENDALE CLUB A large assemblage of members and visitors were to be seen on the Edendale Bowling Club's greens on Saturday on the occasion of the official opening of the club for the 1927-28 season. Special reference was made by the president, Mr. C. Addison, in his opening address to the work done by the green superintendent, Mr. J. McLeod, and the green-keeper, Mr. L. Butler. On behalf of members he presented Mr. McLeod with a case of pipes. Reference to the splendid work done in the past by those enthusiasts who had laid the foundations for the present prosperity of the club was made by Mr. W. J. Edwards, who, speaking on behalf of past presidents, presented the club with enlarged photographs of Messrs. F. Bluck, W. J. Edwards, F. Stillwell and H. Horspool. Grey Lynn Club The throwing of the Jack by the president’s wife, Mrs. W. H. Newton, was the signal for the commencement of the season’s play on the Grey Lynn greens on Saturday. Howick Bowling Club The Howick Bowling Club held its official opening on Saturday, in fine weather. The green after the recent rain was heavy, and it was some time before the majority of the players could get the strength. The president. Mr. A. Selby, welcomed the visitors, calling on Miss Selby to throw the jack, after which he declared the greens open for the season. A large number of visitors were present from neighbouring and city clubs. There were a number of the new members of the club on the green, and with more joining up in the near future, a successful season is anticipated. Following are the results of the afternoon’s play: N. Clevedon Club The opening of the Clevedon Bowling Club was celebrated on Saturday. Although a trifle heavy in consequence of the rain during the spring, the green was in good order and a very enjoyable afternoon’s play eventuated. Mr. A. D. Bell, president, of the club, welcomed the visitors, calling on Mrs. Bell to throw the jack, and declared the green open. A large number of visitors were present, representatives from Pukekohe, Papakura, Manurewa, Patumahoe and Papatoetoe helping to swell the numbers. During the afternoon Mr. Jas. Pascoe, president of the Auckland centre, paid a visit to the green. He was accompanied by members of the executive. The membership of the club has shown a very satisfactory increase this season, and everything points to a successful season.

Henderson Club Approximately 20 bowlers and their friends assembled on the Henderson Bowling Club’s greens on Saturday on the occasion of the official opening ceremony. Several prominent bowlers were present. During the afternoon opportunity was taken to present the popular secretary, Mr. H. J. Chandler, with a set of bowls and a case.
