COMPLIMENTARY DINNER PLACE CUP WINNERS (From Our Otcn Correspondent) HAMILTON, Monday. The excellent performances of th%. Hamilton Rugby football representative team during the past season were j recognised in a practical manner when | was tendered a complimentary dinner by the Hamilton Rugby Union ox: Saturday night. The chairman, Mr. Con. Christie, m proposing the toast of the donor of tht Peace Cup uMr. R. English), states that it had been of inestimable value ! to the Hamilton Rugby Union, ami much sought by the country teams To Mr. English was due the credit o: promoting the welfare of Rugby football in the Waikato. Mr. R. English, in responding, s.iid that he had been evading public mention of his name in that connection | over since the cup was presented, but now it had come to light he said lit felt pleased with the results that had i attended the inauguration of the corai petition. He referred to the circumstances which led to the presentation jof the cup and said he felt particuj larly gratified with the result. it j had certainly contributed toward rais- ■ ing the standard of Rugby football in ! the district, and he hoped it would j continue to do so. TEAM’S FINE RECORD . Mr. A. Ciiffe, chairman of the Rugby Union Management Committee, in proj posing the toast of the Hamilton re- | presentative team, referred in congratulatory terms to its well -merited I success during the past season, and the displays given by the team which had paid strict attention to training. He expressed the thanks of the union to the players on their success in winning and retaining the Peace Cup, and he hoped they would continue to perform a» well as they did during the 1927 season. Mr. W. Christie, captain of the team. : returned thanks for the remarks made, stating that he thought the fifteen was one of the best under dry weather conditions, which had represented Hamilton for some time past. Unfortunately the weather conditions had been against them, but even though by onlj- small margins of points on occasions. th«g had managed to scramble out of the soup. A Voice: It was soup, too. Bill! Mr. Colin Speight, on whom devolved the proposing of the toast to the selector, Mr. Neil Hamilton, said the success of the representative team was in a very large measure due to him. The season had been a record one financially, but heavy expenditure had been necessary for ground improvements. Mr. Neil Hamilton, in reply, stated that he had been very fortunate in the assistance he had received from the union secretary, Mr. T. Thompson, and the players both on and ofT the field. The toast of the Hamilton Rugby Union, the governing body, was proposed by Mr. G. Badeley, who spoke in eulogistic terms of the work it had accomplished and of the assistance and encouragement given to players. The union had gone in for an extensive scheme of improvements and it would bring about an improved standard of football. Mr. Udy briefly responded on behalf of the Hamilton Rugby Union. Subsequently representative cups won during the season were presented by the president, Mr. C. Christie, who was called upon to respond to a toast in his honour at the termination of a very pleasing function.
