WHIPPET RACING AT THE SUMMER SHOW
A. AND P. INNOVATION CHALLENGE TO ATHLETES TYESERTED show-rings and crowded side-shows have caused the A. and P. Association some thought, and this year it will make an innovation by adding whippet racing to its programme. This sport, in addition to the horse competitions, proved exceedingly popular recently at the Manawatu Show. There will be an element of novelty about the events. Whippets do not chase a hare, but are trained to start as does an athlete—by the gun. There will be two flat races and a hurdle race, each of three heats, and a final. A prize of £2O is offered any owner who can produce a greyhound to beat the whippets from scratch, over 100 yards, and a challenge is issued to any j athlete to take 35 yards and beat a whippet over 100 yards. The races are expected to be exciting as well as unique. Mr. W. Marks, of the Auckland Meat Company, has given three acres of feed to the A. and P. Association for the coming which starts at Epsoax «n December 2.
