BOY KILLED BY CAR
RUNNING FROM BOLTING HORSE DRIVER’S VIEW OBSCURED Injuries received by Edward Henry Sievwright, aged six years, who was run over by a motor-car in Campbell Road yesterday afternoon, resulted in his death in the Auckland Hospital three hours later. A peculiar combination of circumstances led to the accident. A runaway horse was galloping along Campbell Road in the direction of the Royal Oak. On reaching the intersection of Manukau Road the horse turned right about, and taking to the footpath on the north side of Campbell Road, ran toward two small boys, sons of Mr. J. H. Sievwright, who were out on a message. The boys, in order to get out of the horse’s way, dashed across the road in front of a stationary motor-car and ran diagonally toward North’s garage. The younger boy reached the opposite side in safety, but his brother, who was two yards behind, was caught by the right-hand mudguard of a car proceeding up Campbell Road and driven by Mr. Alfred White, of Marere Road, Onehunga. DIED THREE HOURS LATER Both the front and rear offside wheels passed over the boy, inflicting head and internal injuries. He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken into North’s garage. Dr. Kirkwood ordered his removal to the hospital, where he died about three hours afterwards. It would appear that the driver of the car was unable to see the boys as they started to run, because of his view being obscured by the stationary car on the north side of the road.
