NEW SYDNEY FERRY BOATS.—More than ordinary interest is being taken in the two vessels which Messrs. Napier and Miller, of Old Kilpatrick, are building for the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company, partly because of their comparatively high speed and partly because they are double-ended. The run which they are intended for is about eight miles in length, but under Sydney Harbour regulations vessels are not allowed to turn at the harbour and w here the traffic inclines to be congested. A double-ended design for the new vessels was. therefore, inevitable. There is a single screw at each end driven by a four-cylinder triple expansion balanced engine. The designed speed of the vessels is 17 knots, and each vessel will carry about 2.000 passengers. When the new bridge which Messrs. Dorman, Long and Co. are building across Sydney Harbour, is completed, there will be, it is expected, considerable opposition to the Manly steamers from motor traffic: hence the high speed aimed at. PILOTAGE AT ALEXANDRIA. The Egyptian Ports and Lights Administration is seeking to render compulsory the employment of pilots by all vessels entering and leaving Alexandria Harbour, and to this end has called a conference of representatives of the navigation companies using the port, states the “Shipping World.” Compulsory pilotage at Alexandria has been enforced at various periods, notably from 1896 to 1905, when, by arrangement, the cost of dredging a new passage was defrayed from the pilotage fees; and from 1916 until 1920, when the military authorities enforced the employment of pilots. The administration contends that since the reversion to optional pilotage accidents to shipping have become more numerous, and cites the cases of six collisions last year of steamships with structures at the mouth of the harbour. The Administration's view is that compulsory pilotage is in the interest of the navigation companies by avoiding the risk of the harbour becoming blocked through shipping sinking in the fairway as the result of collision. The navigation companies have not yet decided on their attitude toward the proposal.
