HUMOUR OF AN EGG

NOT SEEN BY COURT WOMAN’S DRESS RUINED That there are humorous possibilities in an egg occurred to two Ponsonby youngsters, but the idea failed to find an echo in the Children’s Court to-day. Two lads of 15 and 16, who were accompanied by their fathers, were persuaded that this joke had miscarried when they were charged respectively with having assaulted and assisted to assault a woman with “a missle to wit an egg.” “These two boys went to the West End picture show on October 1.” said Sergeant Turner. “The younger had taken an egg from home in order to have some fun with it. At half-time they started to throw it to each other. Then the owner handed it to the other boy. Two women, were crossing the street and the boy threw the egg at them. “It struck one of them on the back of the neck, spattering her coat, hat and dress. The damage is estimated at between £5 and £6.” Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., to the eggowner: What had you in mind when you took the egg?—l was going to have some fun w’ith it. But w'hat sort of fun can you have with an egg?—l don’t know. The egg-thrower declared that his intention was not to hit the girl but t 6 “get near her.” The Magistrate: There was not very much fun in that?—l suppose not. One of the fathers said he had givem his son “a good talking to.” He had two music lessons a week, and was not allowed out often. The girl with the damaged dress had not obeyed a subpoena to show her clothes. “I think a strapping might have done good in each case,” said Mr. McKean. He ordered each lad to pay £2 compensation at the rate of 5s a week.
