“RAIN” SAVED
AN Australian actress recently saved “Rain” from disaster. At half-past six on the evening of the second performance Margaret Lawrence was suffering from such a severe attack of gastritis that the management was informed it was absolutely impossible for her to appear. Dick Stewart, manager of the Sydney Criterion, performed the most heroic action possible to any theatrical man. He offered to give the audience their money back, or tickets for a subsequent performance. Only three members of the audience availed themselves of the offer after Mr. Stewart had mentioned that Daphne Bairn had volunteered to try out the part of Sadie. Remembering the sterling performance put up by Daphne Bairn when at a moment’s notice she had to take Margaret Lawrence’s part in “The Road to Rome,” the audience stayed on and were rewarded by an excellent performance under distressing circumstances. “Rain” will probably be done in New Zealand.
