ITALY’S ARMISTICE DAY
COMMEMORATION TO-MORROW
To-morrow the Italian flag will be hoisted on all Italian consulates in New Zealand to commemorate the ninth anniversary of Italy’s great victory against the Empire of the Hapsburg. In June, 1918, the Austrian Army, helped by several German divisions made a last effort to break the Italian line, but after a desperate battle that waged for a fortnight, the enemy was defeated and thrown back across the river.
It was the beginning of the end. On October 24 Italy took the offensive and after a battle which raged from the Stelvio to the sea for 11 days the Imperial Army, the pride of the Hapsburgs, was signally defeated. On November 6 the armistice with Austria was signed and a stormy period jin the history of Europe thus closed.
