AT ELLERSLIE
TRAINING OPERATIONS RIDERS FOR WHANGAREI Several good gallops were seen at Ellerslie this morning. to be going much the better at the end. Idun and Liamond Queen were sprinted half a mile, the final three furlongs taking 40. NO. 2 GRASS Scaramouche and Bahama were partnered over five furlongs, the last four occupying 55. Queen Emerald traversed a round, covering the last seven furlongs in 1.33 1-5 —a fair effort. They jumped them all pleasingly, with the exception of the last obstacle, which Master Arch did not negotiate very cleanly. Odin (Rutherford) gave a safe display over six hurdles. RILING AT WHANGAREI At Whangarei next week W. H. Jones will ride Baby Bun, Speechless, Gala Lay and Quaestor. R. McTavish will have the mount on Dave, Bombarder and Uralla. E. Ludlow is to ride Royal, Desert Knight and Eh Timi. JOTTINGS Rahepoto is to be turned out for a couple of months, and will probably not be seen in action again until the autumn. The Maniapoto gelding does not like the hard tracks, and in this connection it is a wise move to spell the horse. R. Conway, who has done | well with Rahepoto since putting him j over the sticks, is to take in hand Maia, I a four-year-old by Chesterfield (sire of Bec.u Cavalier) from a Marble Arch mare. X. Davis, the Gisborne apprentice, is coming to Ellerslie to join up with trainer H. F. Hastedt. This boy can go to scale at seven stone, and, as he : has already shown some promise in the | saddle his services will no doubt be availed of. Davis rode a couple of winners at the recent Poverty Bay | meeting, including the principal event ‘on the conclvjjing day.
