SOUTHERN PROVINCES SCORE AGAIN
ONLY TWO AUCKLANDERS
Possibly its was on tlie score of expense that the New Zealand Cricket Council has decided to rope in the “left over” members of the New Zealand touring cricket team to play against a bare eleven of the homecoming tourists at Wellington. The selection is almost reduced to an absurdity when it is found that Henderson is 12tli man for the New Zealand team, and an alternative selection for the Rest. The idea of Oliver and Henderson playing against their comrades seems a little “off” when there are first-class men available, whom the cricketing public would very much like to see in action against the touring team, if only to settle a number of arguments about last year’s selection. That is no reflection on the selectors, but it would make the match more attractive from a public standpoint, and after all, it is gate receipts that are tlie primary object of the match. As per usual, Wellington and Canterbury dominate the selection of the Rest, these two aggressive cricket provinces being represented by eight out of the twelve players chosen for the Rest. It is a safe bet that the public would sooner have seen Matheson (Auckland) in place of Cunningham, in view of the young Aucklander’s rapid rise last year, while Player
has strong claims to a place even in a team representative of the whole of New Zealand. The sooner Auckland gets representation on the New Zealand Selection Committee the better.
