KAITUNA RIVER CUT

A RED-LETTER DAY

The formal opening by the removal of the tapu from the new cut at Ongutoro, giving access for the Kaituna River to the sea by the old reopened channel, took place yesterday. Representatives of all the Araw.< tribes, the Arawa Trust Board, and Kaituna River Board, were present. A thousand people also were present and there was great tribal enthusiasm. Mr. Board, chairman of the Kaituna River Board, formally declared the cut open, launches motoring over the bar under flags stretched over the river.

A big banquet and many speeches followed.

Telegrams from the Prime Minister and the Hon. A. T. Xgata were read at the opening ceremony, congratulating the district and expressing hopes for the success of the project.
