LOVE’S OLD DREAM—AND THE AWAKENING

“OLD FOOLS” IN COURT

TWILIGHT ROMANCE ENDS After being married 18 months, Florence Elizabeth Best applied for a separation order against her husband, Richard Best, at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Mrs. Best is 63 years of age and her husband i 6 65. The husband, who had been married before, had 14 children, and Mrs. Best was a widow at the time of her. marriage. When she married she forfeited an old-age pension and also a war pension for a son killed on service. The husband defended the case and when the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, heard this he said: “Is it suggested that these old fools can live together?” Mr. Vialoux, who appeared for Mr. Best, replied that it was. “HIGH-TEMPERED MAN” The wife complained that her man was high-tempered and she never knew when she had him. “You’ve got him,” said the magistrate. Mrs. Best went on to say that after the wedding she went to live at Glen Afton, near Uuntly. There was a tworoomed cottage to live in and she had four men to care for. A witness, whose evidence was taken at Huntly, refuted the suggestion that Mrs. Best had been going out to dances. “She shouldn’t have been such a fool as to get married,” said the magistrate. “That’s right,” replied Mrs. Best, with fervour. Mr. Hunt said that he would grant the separation and order the husband to pay 10s a week maintenance, thereby making her eligible again for the oldage pension. “You’re back now where you started,” he said to Mrs. Best. “The only difference is you’ve got two wedding rings.”
