IMMIGRANTS PREFERRED
NATIVES’ ASSN. PROTEST
TRAMWAY APPOINTMENTS Assertions that it was the set policy of the Auckland Tramway Department to give preference to immigrants on the question of employment and promotion were made at a meeting of the New Zealand Natives’ Association last evening. A letter of protest is to be sent to the council. It was stated that recently * nine new tramway inspectors were appointed. Of this number, eight were immigrants, and one was reported to have been in the country little more than a year. As there were well over 100 applications for the positions from men in the employ of the department, it was considered that on an efficiency basis a bigger percentage of New Zealanders should have been placed. The appointments, as they stand, were considered a clear indication of preference.
