The Laughing Prince The manner in which Laughing Prince acquitted himself on Tuesday, when he galloped seven furlongs in the excellent time of lmin 28 3-ssec., is proof that the Quantock colt is right at the top of his form. He looks very well indeed, and he is almost sure to start a warm favourite for the Derby. In some quarters he is looked upon as a “good thing” for the classic race, but it must not be forgotten that this year’s contest bears a very open appearance, and it cannot be said that anything stands out. Australia’s Three-year-olds When F. D. Jones arrived back from his trip to Sydney he informed the Christchurch “Sun” that the three-year-olds racing in New South Wales were not up to the standard of other
years, but he was of opinion that Trivalve was a good colt, who was likely to make a name for himself as the season advanced. This prophecy proved correct, and as Trivalve won both the A.J.C. and Victorian Derbies, and added the Melbourne Cup to his list of victories, it can be taken for granted that the son of Valais is a colt out- of the ordinary.
Popular Sydney Horse Bacchus, as a stayer, has seized the public fancy in Sydney. Already there are signs that he is going to be one of the most popular horses there for the Melbourne Cup, says a Sydney writer before the big race. Bacchus has not yet done a serious long gallop at Flemington, yet there has been a pronounced run on him during the past two days. Sydney bookmakers don’t mind how much money comes in for a local horse, because as fast as they lay it they can cover at a profit in Melbourne, where Bacchus is not so popular. There is specious reasoning behind those who are supporting the Magpie gelding. His long runs in race after race at Randwick, Rosehill and Warwick Farm have suggested that two miles at Flemington will be to his liking. The two long runs, the first along the river side to the mile, and the second from there to the home turn, will give the lazy Bacchus room to streak out. Finally, the straight is longer than that at Randwick, for his finishing run. Whether Bacchus is quite good enough is another question. The fact that he was so close to Pantheon and Limerick in the Randwick Plate does not prove it, because the slow pace at which the first 10 furlongs of that race was run enabled him to keep close to the other two. With only 5.5 on his back, Bacchus has a golden chance to prove that he is what his many admirers believe—a true stayer. But he must have a dry track.
