ENLARGEMENT OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY
“URGENT NATIONAL NEED”
By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 11.35 a.m. LONDON, Thurs. “The enlargement of Westminster Abbey is of urgent nation kl importance,” says the Church Assembly’s Cathedral Commission, issuing a report of a sub-commission of which the Archbishop of York is chairman. The report says: “No further memorial space la available, and the enlargement must not be delayed if the abbey is to remain the shrine of the nation’s memories of great men and women.” The sub-commission firmly rejected the idea of shifting the existing memorials or of building a hall of fame elsewhere. It suggested an extension on the north side, to which some of the members objected. It would entirely change the aspect familiar to generations. It proposes alternatively a building less conspicuous, and parallel with Henry Vll.’s chapel on the east side, for which it recommends the preparation of plans. It is simultaneously seeking expert advice on the northern scheme.—A. and N.Z.
