MAJESTIC
“CAPTAIN SALVATION”
“Captain Salvation’’ is a saga of adventure which will be screened at the Majestic Theatre to-night. It is a story of strong men, of tremendous emotions and amazing adventure.
Adapted from the novel by Frederick William Wallace and directed by John S. Kobertson, it has been staged largely on board a ship on the high seas; an actual sea voyage having been made in an old-time clipper ship for this purpose. Lars Hanson, the famous Swedish actor, who scored a great triumph in “The Scarlet Letter” gives an intensely interesting characterisation as the hero, a divinjty student who forsakes the pulpit for the sea.
Ernest Torrence contributes a masterly portrayal of the brutal sea captain, who laughs when men go through torture; gloating at their misery on board his ship.
Marceline Hay plays the part of Lars Hanson’s sweetheart with charm, and Pauline Starke in the role of “Bess Morgan,” a human derelict, makes her a vivid and glowing personality. George Fawcett gives a splendid performance as an old sailor, and Sam de Grasse, Flora Finch, Eugenie Ford and others of note arc in the well-balanced Mr. Birrell O’Malley, the popular tenor who received such an ovation during the presentation of the Auckland Choral Society’s great production, “Aida,” will appear on the stage. His numbers will include “Serenata” (Toselli) and “Thank God for a Garden” (Bel Kiego). Mr. Whiteford-Waugh s New Majestic Orchestra will present one of its excellent musical _ programmes. “Oberon” overture (Weber) will be specially featured as a musical interlude.
One of the most attractive features of the programmes presented at the Majestic Theatre is the bright, interesting short films included in the supoorting programme. Those presented this week are exceptionally interesting. The Majestic News contains scenes of Italian midshipmen in. training at Leghorn, Mount Kilauea (Honolulu) in eruption, the arrival of the Prince of Wales and Prince George in Canada, and the warm welcome in Quebec, the funeral of King Ferdinand, and a short film showing a carnival at Venice.
Then there is the ever-interesting Eve's Review, containing an exhibition dance. “The Waltz of the Kiss,” by Harrv Rove and Billee Maye, of Embassy Club, London, Paris and New York, rivers and canals on the English Norfolk Broads, modern Eve trying her hand at horse-training, and “More Anzac Memories.” a beautifully-coloured scenic of Hooge and Bailleul, showing all that is left of the old Hooge, “Sanctuarv Wood,” Hill GO, that battered spot where the ghosts of warriors still linger; Poperinghe, where countless khaki-clad warriors tramped in clays of yore; another immortal name. “Plug Street,” and from "Gray’s Inn” to Mount Kemmel. This item is one of intense interest to all Anzacs and their friends. A beautiful New Zealand scenic, “Strawberry Time In the Winterless North,” and a screamingly funny animal comedy, “Live Cowards.” featuring Al. St. John, conclude the supporting pictorial programme.
Beautiful Barbara Worth, described as the most sensational screen find of the year, making an almost overnight advance from obscurity to featured film roles, plays opposite Reginald Bennv in his latest Universal production '’Fast and Furious.” Less than a vear ago Miss Worth toiled unheralded and unsung in the ranks of the extra girls. In “Fast and Furious” she reveals the ability and personality that has set her footsteps on the road to film stardom-
